I've found eyeshadow to be a necessary part of my make up routine everyday. I feel like it helps so much in enhancing my eye shape and color. There is a lot of different things to keep in mind, such as what eyeshadow shades are best for different eye colors, what brushes to use when applying, and how to do different looks, and some random tips I've learned over the years.

Let's talk what colors to use

It is best to stick to the eyeshadow shades that compliment your skin tone and eye shade, and remember the time of day you are shopping for and the venue you will be at will greatly influence your eyeshadow color choice. 

Day Time: It is best to target the lighter and neutral shades.

Evening: This is the time suited for experimenting as you can typically get away with stronger shades and bolder colors.

I have brown eyes, and what's nice is that brown eyes can get away with wearing almost any color of eyeshadow. If you want to really make them pop then try either green eyeshadow or pink eyeshadow. With brown eyes, you can also use blue/purple eyeshadow, and if you have gold flecks in your eyes you may want to try an eyeshadow that has a gold shimmer to it. Brown eyes can even pull-off wearing brown eyeshadow, but be careful because certain tones can look muddy against your beautiful brown eyes.

If you have blue eyes, you'll want to go after golden browns, browns with a slight purple base, taupe, and slate colored grays. Have some fun with it. Try a nice rose colored eyeshadow. The coolness from the pink/purple eyeshadow will be a really nice contrast to your blue eyes. 

For you green eyed girls, go after those purple shades that will really make them pop! If you want your eyes to stand out but look more natural, you may want to try warmer mocha brown shades or warm colors with slight orange undertones. Basic eyeshadow colors for green eyes would be earth tones with slight hints of gold, taupe colors, mocha browns, and lavender-purple shades. Since most green and hazel eyes has a variety of flecks, feel free to experiment with these colors so you can find the perfect one for your eyes.

The most important thing here is, don't overdue it. Less is more. Blending is key. 

Eyeshadow now comes in many styles and finishes. It is available in creams, powders, liquid and pencils. There's so much out there, that I would just try out different things and see what works best for you.

It can be frosted; matte, glitter, shimmer and some are specifically designed for drier or older skin. Many manufactures now produce eyeshadow compacts with coordinated shades of eyeshadow, typically including a light, medium and dark shade. 

The ever-changing trends and fashion statements have lead us to see a rise in the use of intense eyeshadow colors. Experimenting with these intense colors on your eyes can be fun. You can test eye shadow colors on the back of your hand or your inner wrist. I've realized though, that while you can grab inspiration from runway or fashion trends, sometimes it's just not meant to be worn for normal day. 

Eyeshadow application will vary greatly from person to person due to eye shape, skin types and the effect you are after, although there are a few principle points on applying eyeshadow. Light shades will generally open and highlight the eyes, giving the eyes a larger look. Dark shades will add depth and dimension, while making the eyes look smaller

To start you should grab the following items of make up

Eyeshadow (light, medium, and dark shades that suit your complexion and eye color)

Makeup Brushes (E.L.F. or SIGMA has some amazing brushes that will do a great job in blending!)

Eyeliner

Mascara

Makeup remover

It is best if you start this process as you would with your normal makeup application, by applying your usual foundation and face powder.

Begin by applying a light color from lash line to brows. Shades of ivory, beige, peach or pink are common, but other light tones can work well. Then apply a medium shade from lash line to crease. Finally, accent the crease of the eyelid with the darkest shade. Blend with a soft brush to avoid removing your eye shadow or smudging. You can apply eyeliner along the lash line and use mascara to accent your eye lashes if you like. Eye makeup remover or a damp cloth can remove smudges. Some people opt to do their eye shadow and other eye makeup before applying foundation and other makeup to allow mistakes to be tidied up more easily.

Stay Away From Dark Lipstick

• Consider getting rid of lipstick and using lip gloss instead. Gloss creates the illusion of puffed-up lips, especially when applied to the middle of lips.

How to Apply Eye Shadow
Applying eye shadow can be a little tricky, but once you know the basics, you get to play with the colors that you have. A lot of women try one technique, like it and never vary it.. ever again.

Select a light base shadow. Using a shadow brush, sweep it across your entire lid, from brow to lash line.
Prime the eyelids by dusting them with a small amount of loose powder.
Blend shadow by stroking the lid gently with an eye shadow brush. Don’t use your finger you could wipe off the shadow entirely.
-Use a medium-toned shade to cover your lower lids.
-Use a cosmetic puff and a little pressed powder to tone down heavy shadow. Shake any excess powder off the puff, then press it gently on your lid.
-Contour the crease of your eyelid with a dark shade, using a smaller eye shadow brush.
Choose three shades in the same color family – light, medium and a darker shade for contrast.
Apply the lightest shade on the entire lid from brow to lash line.

Eye Shadow Applying Tip 1: First decide the color you want to use. Almond color is considered best for eye but using three to four color will look good only if they are mixed well.

Eye Shadow Applying Tip 2: To give a smoky look to your eyes, prefer using dark colors, like blue, grey or black. Brush them at the outer corners and blend them well. Don’t move further more than quarter inch away from your eye.


Eye Shadow Applying Tip 3: If you have a thin eye shadow brush you might want to try darkening the crease area with a little more dark shadow, just along the crease though……gives a different type of effect.

Eye Shadow Applying Tip 4: Use two shades of the same color for that exotic look. The inner corner of the eye area is lighter in shade and the shadow deepens in color towards the outer eye.

Eye Shadow Applying Tip 5: The shadow is applied only on the upper eyelid, leaving the space beneath the brows. If you wish, you may apply some shadow on the lower lash line to add color.

Eye Shadow Applying Tip 6: Apply the dark shade to the eye lid area. It is best to start in the middle of the eye lid and work out towards the outside, cover the entire lid. Blend the crease area in well. If you have a thin eye shadow brush you might want to try darkening the crease area with a little more dark shadow, just along the crease though……gives a different type of effect.
Here are some of the choices for shading and highlighting that you can try:
Highlight the eyelid, round the shading: Best suited for hooded eyes and older deep set eyes.
Highlight the eyelid, wing the shading: Best suited for younger deep set eyes.
Shade the eyelid and round the shading: Best suited for prominent lids and younger deep set eyes.
Shade the eyelid and wing the shading: Best suited for younger deep set eyes.
Eye shadows come in in several textures, powders (compacts), pencils, and creams:
Powder can be used either dry or wet and it’s really easy to control. Make sure you look for a powder that feels moist.
Pencils are fairly easy to use, but you need to remember to smear the line as you go or you’ll have lines all over your face.
Creams tend to be hard to control. They can look beautiful and stay that way if you use a good quality eye foundation (eye primer), otherwise they can slip and slide into the creases on your eyes and eyelids.

Smoky eyes are everywhere for fall, and the look has never been fresher because they are being done in every shade from classic charcoal to soft browns, and even vibrant shades like plum or teal. Smoky eyes is not a color, it is a technique; or rather many techniques.

Here is one of my favorites from makeup artist Christian McNally. It looks fierce and only takes about five minutes. Have faith. it may look like a hot mess when you are halfway through, but it comes together magically in the end. Blending is the key!

• Start by smoothing a tiny bit of Lemon Lid Primer over the whole lid, lash line to brow. Blend well with your finger tips or the Camouflage Brush.
• Next, apply coordinating eye Pencil: For example, Black/Brown works well with brown or plum smoky eyes; Black or Black/Grey works with charcoal or teal. Draw a thick line across the upper lash line, going about half way up the lid towards the crease. Draw another line under the lower lashes, from inner to outer corner. Connect the two lines at the outer corner, and don't worry about being neat.
• Blend the Pencil well with the Small Fluff Brush to a soft, edgeless finish. One thing I have learned is to blend with a very light touch. It may take longer, but otherwise I end up blending off the makeup I just applied!
• Take your desired shade of PurePressed Eyeshadow Triple. Apply the medium shade to the outer two-thirds of the upper lid with the Crease Brush. The crease can stay clean for this look; concentrate the color on the lid and lash line.
• Apply the lightest shade on the inner third on the upper lid with the same brush and blend the two together with your clean Crease Brush (simply wipe it off on a tissue).
• With the Mini Dome Brush, use the darkest shade in the trio to intensify everywhere you placed the eye Pencil. Blend well.
• Again with the Crease Brush, highlight with a little bit of Oyster (shimmery) or Bone (matte) PurePressed Eye Shadow in the inner corner of the eye at the sides of the nose, and on the brow bone. Blend well.
• Line the inner rim (waterline) of the upper and lower lash line with Liner. Use the same liner or try Black for fierce drama, or Midnight Blue to really whiten the whites of your eyes.
• Apply PureLash Extender & Conditioner to upper and lower lashes to condition lashes and add volume and length. While it is still damp, follow with several coats of Longest Lash Mascara in Black Ice.  

Now with eyes this intense, please keep the cheeks and lips soft and neutral. The one exception for this fall might be a subtle pop of hot pink. Use a light hand and try Clarity In Touch Cream Blush on the cheeks and Sugar Plum PureGloss on the lips

When To Throw Out Old Makeup

Every woman on earth buys and uses makeup to look beautiful. Makeup prices can range from the ultra cheap to the very expensive branded products that only the elite can afford. However not many women realize that makeup can also and does expire and when that happens no matter how expensive that makeup is you are supposed to dispose of it immediately. Bad or expired makeup can cause a lot of trouble on your skin, so you need to be careful to read the expiration label on your makeup box.

What women should know, but many do not know is that their makeup can literally become too old. Some women never have to worry about their makeup becoming too old because they wear it so often that they replace it regularly. However, some people who have a large load of makeup or only wear it every so often tend to hoard their face makeup for far too long.

Many women will keep the same lipstick, the same eyeliner, the same blush, the same eye shadow, lip liner, and mascara for years and never even realizing that it could be dangerous. What you may not realize is that face makeup that is old tends to hold dangerous bacteria that can be harmful to both your health and your skin.

• Loose Powder - Loose powders should be thrown away a year after purchase.

• Concealer and Foundation - Both foundation and concealers should be thrown out six months after purchase. However, if you notice a funny smell or separation of the liquid you should throw it out immediately.

Powder Blush- Powder blush should be discarded a year after purchase. If you happen to know clumping or flaking of the blush, then you should throw it out and replace it.

• Mascara - Mascara has the least amount of shelf life. It should without a doubt be thrown out three months after purchase.

Your overall health and skin health depends on your makeup and sorting through it routinely. So the next time you go over to the store to buy your makeup make sure to look for the expiration date on the box or bottle of the product. This will ensure that the makeup you buy has a long enough expiration period that will allow you to finish the product before it expires.

Baby shampoo is an excellent way to remove mascara that is resistant to other kinds of removers. Waterproof mascara can be one of the most difficult mascaras to remove as it is designed for staying power and a little bit of baby shampoo applied to a cotton ball or your finger tips should do the tricky nicely. Baby shampoos contain lower concentrations and softer detergents than other shampoos which makes them less irritating to the eye area. Baby shampoo can also be used to remove makeup on the face but use a very small amount as too much can be drying to the skin.

Best alternative for oily and all sin types:if you don't want to use any oil on your face for removing make up,best way is to dip cotton balls in raw milk and just wipe your face with it. It is the cheapest way of removing makeup.
Mineral oil is best for removing make up. It is even cheaper than baby oil. Since, baby oil is nothing more than mineral oil with fragrance and both give same results.

Always use a mild makeup remover. Nothing harsh or drying to the skin- and never use makeup remover that is specifically for your eyes on other parts of your face. This is particularly important if you suffer from oily skin as this can lead to break outs. Pay attention to what the label says as it specifies these things for a reason!

To remove makeup naturally without clogging pores and moisturize skin at the same time, use unrefined pure oils like jojoba, wheat germ or rose hip oil. Massage it directly into your skin or wipe skin with a cotton pad saturated with the oil. Finish by gently wiping skin with a steamy, damp cloth.

Using a dry towel or absorbent pad press on the stain to draw moisture and stain particles out of the surface area. Continue this pattern using an alternating combination of saturation and pressure until the stain is removed. If the stain still remains you may want to try flushing the area with water and adding a few drops of ammonia. This will further help to draw out the stain. Cover it with a towel or absorbent pad and allow it to absorb the stain.

I know you are anxious to begin working as a freelance makeup artist, but just in case you don't have the funds to attend school right now, you can still gain useful knowledge and experience. I've been working as a freelance makeup artist for about 5 years now, and even though it's hard work, I get to meet lots of different people and attend beautiful weddings. The most rewarding part for me is being able to "transform" the look of my clients. I just love it when they get excited and start smiling at the results.

The advice you receive from this article will help you get a descent start in getting the products you need, some clients to put in your chair, and to help you be more professional. Don't forget there is more than one way to gain the experience you need, and I'm presenting some ideas and lessons that have helped me along the way.

When I first started I remember reading books about makeup/beauty. What helped me was getting books with color pictures to demonstrate the techniques, and with detailed writing. Some books contain content that is very vague, so it's difficult to tell what is being done to the model's face, which is why detail is so important. Also, try to be diverse about the types of books you read. I read books about mature beauty, Asian beauty, and Latina beauty because I wanted to be aware of certain concerns those groups may have. Great places to get books are from online bookstores and the local library.

If you have the extra funds I totally recommend attending a seminar from a professional (or a celebrity) makeup artist. This is a great opportunity to help you network with other freelance makeup artists, and to see the makeup application process through someone else's eyes. It will help you improve your own work because you will receive some fresh ideas and information about great cosmetic products that are on the market.

Some items that you will need before getting started as a freelance makeup artist are a makeup case, makeup brushes, sample testers, a director's chair, and makeup of course. A great place to purchase these items would be Ebay, or your local beauty supply. The makeup case I use has wheels with an extended handle, and fold-out compartments. I've used it for all of my assignments, and I've had no problems traveling with it. In regards to makeup brushes, make sure you opt for a set that isn't too expensive, and will last a while - preferably sable or squirrel. Some examples of sample testers are individual mascara wands, lipstick applicators, and spatulas. These are so important to have because you want to prevent the transfer of bacteria from one client to the next. Pencil sharpeners are essential too for lip and eyeliners. Use it to shave off the used portion after dealing with each client.

You will use a director's chair when seating your clients. I'm tall, so I find it incredibly useful. It's also easy to fold and place in the trunk of my car. When collecting makeup, always start with basic, very diverse shades and colors. This will help in case you're ever in a situation where you have to mix two different colors to get the desired color you need. The brand you use is up to you, but make sure you have the basics.

Some other good pointers would be to start with family and friends first. When you're first starting out, you're going to make mistakes, so it's easier to use people who are close to you as your guinea pigs. They're a lot less critical, and I'm sure they'll make recommendations on how you can improve. Also, expose yourself to other artists that have different strengths. I say this because every freelance makeup artist has a different interpretation of what a certain look should be. I've known makeup artists that were wonderful at dramatic makeup, stage makeup, and bridal makeup. The more you learn from different people, the more diverse your techniques will be, which will improve your ability.

Last, but certainly not least, be professional. If you have a scheduled assignment, please be on time. Know that the bulk of your business will come from referrals, so you want to leave a good impression with your clients. If you have a client that is getting married and you have to work on location, dress appropriately for the wedding. Always wear an outfit that is classy, but that you can easily move around in. I tend to do a lot of walking when I'm on location, so it helps that my clothes aren't restrictive. Don't forget to bring your business cards with you to every event. We invest in expensive makeup, we read up on how to perfectly apply it, and we take the time every morning to put it on with perfect precision. We do this, so that we can cover up those fine lines and wrinkles without looking like we're wearing makeup. We do this so that we can achieve that perfect moist and dewy look without our skin looking oily. So that we can add that subtle, yet vibrant boost of color to our eyes, making them stand out, and so that we can achieve those perfect lips- plump and pouty without being too whorish looking.

And isn't it disappointing when you dedicate all that time to achieve the seemingly impossible, only to have your makeup slide off your face a few hours later?

Well ladies, keep reading, because below I've included some fabulous makeup tricks on how to get long lasting makeup -so that it stay on all day long or all evening out!

Let's start with the very basics - moisturizer. Its important to properly hydrate your skin before applying makeup,as your makeup needs something to stick to (for those of you with oily skin, it's best to use an oil free moisturizer). You do not want to apply your makeup right after, as you need to provide your skin with enough time to properly absorb the moisture, otherwise your makeup will simply slide right off. Therefore, it's best to wait 10 - 20 minutes first.

The next step is to apply a makeup primer. Primers provide a clean 'base' to your makeup and absorb excess oils, providing your makeup with long lasting power. They also have built in moisturizing power, so unless your skin is particularly dry, you can actually use a primer in place of a moisturizer. Some of the popular ones include NARSmakeup primer (which has the added benefit of built in SPF 20), Smashbox photo finish foundation primer, or Naked Minerals Neroli setting mist- which is actually sprayed on after makeup application, rather than before, and provides you with a radiant glow.

After the primer, apply a liquid foundation. Oil based foundations tend to provide better coverage than the oil free ones, however they also slide off more quickly. So unless you really need the heavy coverage, opt for an oil-free foundation. I find that the "mousse" consistency foundations also stay on quite well, like Biotherm.

To ensure that your foundation is set in place, dust a light layer of loose powder on top. This helps "seal" in your makeup and blot any excess oils that may develop,providing your makeup with long lasting power.

If you have really oily skin, you might want to try carrying around oil blotting pads (clean and clear makes excellent cheap ones). By blotting up excessive oil throughout the day, you'll help stop your makeup from "sliding off" your face, keeping it in place, where it belongs!

Next, choose a blush. Your best option is cheek stain, it stays on the longest. Cheek stain can provide some pretty powerful color though, and it can also be a bit difficult to spread. In which case the next great alternative is a powder based blush, as those tend to stay on much longer than cream blushes. If you choose to use bronzer instead of brush, also go for the powder version over any of the creamy or liquid options.

After applying blush, head up toward the eyes. For eye shadow that stays on all day long, try prepping your lids first with an eye primer - like Benefit Cosmetics FY eye, or moisturizer, and then dab on a light layer of foundation to follow. Wait for it set and then apply your eyeshadow. This should make it last double as long!

If you use eyeliner, although eye pencil will provide you with a slightly more natural look, liquid eyeliner will stay on the longest.

When applying mascara, opt for a waterproof one - you never know when you might feel the need to cry, or when it may just start raining. Make sure to apply multiple coats for thicker lashes and la long lasting stay.

And finally, your lips. Avoid using lip-balm right before applying lip color- it makes your makeup slide right off. Apply lip pencil all around the edges and then color in the insides with pencil too. Dab on a drop of foundation to fill in the cracks, and then brush on loose powder to set. Proceed to apply your lipstick as usual.

Matte lipsticks are preferred.While they may be drying, they tend to stay on much longer then their "moisture providing" counterparts. If you're looking a "wet" finish, you might want to apply a layer of sheer gloss on top.

And now you're finished - so relax and enjoy! There are a million things you have to worry about or remember throughout the day, but reapplying your makeup is simply not one of them!
